The $2,900 Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold Phone Sells Out Online in Minutes

It might be shockingly expensive, but early signs suggest Samsung’s triple-screen phone is in demand.

When we first learned the eye-watering price of Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold, our first question was: Who will be able to afford a phone that costs nearly $3,000? The answer, it turns out, is more people than you might think.

When members of our team logged onto the Samsung website this morning as the TriFold went on sale in the US for the first time, only one person was able to secure a unit. Everyone else was met with a message saying that the device was out of stock and would be restocked soon, indicating that the phone sold out in minutes.

We don’t actually have any indication of how many TriFolds Samsung made available to US buyers and how many it’s sold so far, but it does indicate that there’s demand for the new phone — even though it costs $2,900, a price CNET Senior Reporter David Lumb is calling «unhinged.»

Perhaps it’s not so surprising this innovative phone is so popular given that in our early hands-on time with the device it was clear that this phone is a true two-for-one device, combining the very best of Samsung’s phone and tablet technology.

«I’d be surprised if Samsung has massive volumes available and there are enough affluent technology enthusiasts in the US market who would love to try this latest and greatest piece of tech,» said Ben Wood, chief analyst and CMO at CCS Insight. «As we have seen in the broader foldables market to date, it’s still a niche category, but something head-turning like this means Samsung arguably has the hottest piece of ‘gadget-bling’ available in the US right now.»

If you’re not one of keen early adopters who managed to get your hands on a TriFold today, or if you’re just curious, you can expect our full review soon. After spending some proper time with the device, we’ll be able to share a more detailed verdict on whether this pricey phone is truly worth almost $3,000.
