Cyber Monday Sale Drops the Backbone Mobile Game Controllers to $65. That’s a Steal
The Backbone One game controllers are among the best I’ve ever used, especially for iPhones.

My bed is covered with game controllers — as is the repurposed shoe organizer hanging off a tension bar that holds the ones I’ve actually put away. (It’s been an interesting work-from-home couple of years.) So when I say that the Backbone One controller, which comes in Xbox (black) and PlayStation (white) versions, is one of my favorites, there’s your context.
This controller and its competitors usually cost around $100, and while the seasonal price for the Backbone One seems to have dropped to $75, Amazon’s got it for $10 off that for Cyber Monday.
The Backbone One attaches to your iPhone via the Lightning port, which is far better than connecting over Bluetooth if you’re sensitive to latency, and it leaves Bluetooth for your audio connection. And you can now magic it to connect to any iOS device with a Lightning port. The switches and triggers feel responsive and the software is great for social players. And because it’s powered by your iPhone, you don’t need to recharge it separately. It can accommodate some of the thinner cases, but not all, so keep that in mind.
I like the feel of Razer’s nearly identical competitor, the Kishi V2, more in some ways — it uses Razer’s optomechanical switches — but at $35 less, the Backbone One is a no-brainer. Even at $25 less. The company’s Android model is in preorder for delivery by Christmas, but sadly at its original $100 price.

Amazon’s Rival to Starlink Satellite Service Is Planning a Rocket Launch: How to Watch Tonight
Project Kuiper is planning to take a major step forward tonight with its first full-scale satellite launch.

Amazon plans to launch 27 low-Earth orbit satellites this evening as part of Project Kuiper. The launch window is set for Wednesday, April 9, between 7 and 9 p.m. ET (4 to 6 p.m. PT), depending on weather and other factors.
The launch mission, «KA-01» or Kuiper Atlas 1, will be on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket and will take place at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Amazon said. There’s a mission page for updates on the launch and plans to livestream the takeoff.
You can watch the rocket launch live on the mission page or on YouTube.
It’ll be a big step forward for the project, which Amazon announced in 2019 with promises of a $10 billion investment. Now the company is poised to enter the race to provide satellite internet service, a space currently dominated by SpaceX’s Starlink, which has about 7,000 satellites. Amazon’s plans call for 3,200 satellites to be deployed over 80 launches. The company intends to provide internet service with this technology later this year.
More competition will improve internet services
The literal space race, which includes Starlink, Amazon and other companies such as Viasat, Hughesnet, Eutelsat and China’s SpaceSail, could mean more availability of internet service in far-flung and rural areas that have limited broadband options. Though Starlink is the leader in the space, some of these other companies are continuing to launch satellites and working to deploy high-speed internet in more markets such as Brazil. With more players in the market, that could mean faster and cheaper internet in more areas, although whether that actually bears out for consumers remains to be seen.
Mahdi Eslamimehr, executive vice president at Quandary Peak Research and adjunct professor at the Department of Computer Science at USC, said Amazon is well poised to go up against Starlink. «Amazon has made extensive launch agreements with major providers such as United Launch Alliance (ULA), Arianespace, Blue Origin, and even SpaceX itself, positioning Kuiper as a major challenger due to its expansive infrastructure and significant resources.»
He said, «While Starlink currently enjoys clear market leadership, it faces increasing competition from well-capitalized and strategically agile competitors, specifically from China, suggesting the market will become considerably more competitive in the near future.»
Amazon’s satellite efforts so far, Eslamimehr said, have been promising and successful, at least in the prototype stages. The company has also been testing Amazon Web Services in space. «These developments collectively underscore Amazon’s robust entry into the satellite internet market and reflect positive early momentum in its overall space strategy.»
Beyond how it fares against Starlink and other companies, the Amazon satellite launches are significant in other ways. Eslamimehr said, «Project Kuiper isn’t just about competition; it’s positioned as a critical step toward closing the global digital divide, promising to deliver high-speed internet to underserved communities worldwide.»
Correction, April 4: An earlier version of this story misspelled the name of the USC professor and Quandary Peak Research executive vice president. His name is Mahdi Eslamimehr.

Loss-of-Pulse Detection Alerts on the Pixel Watch 3 Are Finally Here
The potentially life-saving feature that detects if your pulse stops is officially rolling out on the latest gen Pixel Watches in the US.

The US rollout for the Loss-of-Pulse detection feature on the Google Pixel 3 starts today. The feature identifies when your pulse is lost and can automatically call emergency services if you’re unresponsive. You can expect a prompt will pop up on your watch to enable it. Don’t worry if it hasn’t happened just yet — the roll-out is estimated to last a few weeks.
Google announced the Loss of Pulse Detection feature in 2024 for select EU countries and received FDA clearance in the US in February.
The watch uses an AI-based algorithm and signals from the existing multipath heart rate sensor (the flashing green light on the back of the watch) to monitor your pulse. If it suspects your pulse was lost, additional sensor signals will be activated to search for the pulse or identify movement.
When nothing is detected, the watch prompts you with an initial check-in. If you don’t respond to the message on the watch and no motion is detected, a loud alarm will play, and a countdown will appear on the screen. Then, an emergency services call is placed on your LTE smartwatch or phone. An automated message about the loss of pulse and your location will be shared with emergency operators.
While the Loss of Pulse Detection feature wasn’t made for any one specific health condition, this is another feature added to the Pixel 3’s impressive catalog of safety and health features, such as fall detection and irregular heart rhythm notifications. As a Google Pixel user, I’m happy to see another feature in the medical safety space, especially for one in which immediate intervention is necessary.
