iPhone 16E vs. iPhone 16: How Apple’s Budget Phone Compares to the Baseline Model
The $599 iPhone 16E offers a notable discount over the $799 iPhone 16, but there are some key differences. Here’s what to know before choosing your next phone.

The $599 iPhone 16E is Apple’s most affordable iPhone, and it shares many features with the $799 iPhone 16. But there are also some sacrifices you’ll need to make for that $200 discount.
While some core components like the A18 chip, iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence are the same for both devices, there are notable differences across the phones’ cameras, designs and batteries.
Here’s how the more budget-friendly iPhone 16E compares to the baseline iPhone 16.
Display and build
The iPhone 16E and iPhone 16 both have a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate. The 16E has a peak brightness of 1,200 nits, while the 16 reaches 2,000 nits. A ceramic shield front and glass back are featured on each phone.
The devices have an aluminum design and are about as heavy as each other, with the iPhone 16E weighing in at 167 grams and the iPhone 16 at 170 grams.
Both phones also have an Action button, but only the iPhone 16 has a Camera Control button. The Dynamic Island feature is also limited to the pricier model. The devices each have an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
Apple drops the home button on its new budget phone in favor of Face ID, just like the iPhone 16. Both devices also have a USB-C port, and neither has a headphone jack.
The iPhone 16E comes in black and white, while the iPhone 16 comes in black, white, pink, teal and ultramarine.
Battery and storage
Both the iPhone 16E and 16 come in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB options. Apple boasts that the 16E can get up to 26 hours of video playback and 21 hours of streamed video playback, while the 16 will last for up to 22 hours of video playback and 18 hours of streamed video playback.
One of the reasons behind the cheaper iPhone’s longer battery life is because it runs on Apple’s very first 5G modem, called C1. The company says its C1 modem is the «most power-efficient modem ever in an iPhone» and as a result helps increase the phone’s battery life.
They each support 20-watt wired charging. The iPhone 16E supports 7.5W Qi wireless charging, while the iPhone 16 is capable of 15W Qi2 charging, as well as MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W with a 30W adapter or higher.
Cameras at a glance
You’ll find a 48-megapixel wide camera on both the iPhone 16E and iPhone 16, as well as a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera on the 16. To make up for its lower camera count, the 16E uses sensor cropping to get a 2x magnification for better zoomed-in shots (as does the iPhone 16). Both phones have a 12-megapixel front-facing camera.
You can shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second on each device. On the iPhone 16, you can shoot 1080p spatial video, but only at 30 frames per second.
Apple Intelligence for all
One of the biggest upgrades to Apple’s lower-priced iPhone is the inclusion of Apple Intelligence, which was previously confined to iPhone 15 Pro models and the iPhone 16 lineup. Now you can spend less and still get access to features like a smarter Siri, writing tools and the Clean Up tool in photos.
This move signals Apple’s eagerness to get its AI suite into more people’s hands, and indicates that AI is now a core component of any iPhone, from the cheapest option to the most premium.
Check out the spec chart below for more details on each phone.

What was up with today’s Wordle answer? I know it’s a word, and I know its plural form is pretty common, and none of the letters are especially uncommon, but still. This word never came to my mind. Today’s Wordle answer is bound to break some streaks. Ugh!
I’m nodding along with the Reddit user who wrote in the Wordle subreddit, «Am I going mad? I am English, a pretty well-educated, well-read person. Has anyone else, aside from academic mathematicians or statisticians ever encountered this word in the singular before?»
Not everyone agrees.
«I don’t think (today’s Wordle answer) is all that obscure for word lovers! It’s playable in Scrabble,» Peter Sokolowski, an editor at Merriam-Webster, told CNET.
Want to know a little bit about the word itself?
«These Latin singulars for nouns more commonly used with their plurals include arcanum and bacterium for arcana and bacteria,» Sokolowski said. «Some are equally well known, like media/medium, while some are more common as singulars but can form the plural in the same way as data, like stadium and atrium and auditorium. English absorbed a large number of Latin terms during the Renaissance and many of them were used with Latin plurals and still are, especially in academic contexts, like colloquia, symposia, curricula.»

AT&T’s New Senior Mobile Plan Offers Big Discounts — and Sorry, 55 Counts as a ‘Senior’
AT&T has a new offering for customers 55 years old and up that’s cheaper than its other plans — and is available throughout the US.

AT&T has unveiled a new phone plan for seniors, offering mobile service at a discount for customers 55 years old and up. (Yes, Gen X, that’s you — or some of you, at least.) True, the new plan is a bit bare-bones without the fancier features of the carrier’s pricier offerings, but it’s also cheaper than those and notably more affordable than its former senior plan.
Carriers typically offer several plans to satisfy a range of customers, from the frugal to those that are willing to pay for every perk and bundled streaming service they can get. But plans targeting older Americans are often more bare-bones offerings, offered at lower prices to appeal to customers on fixed and limited incomes. AT&T’s new AT&T 55 Plus plan is the most affordable it’s offered in years.
In exchange, the AT&T 55 Plus plan is pretty basic. For $40 per month for a single line (or $35 per month per line with two lines), you’ll get unlimited voice calls, texting and data in the US, Canada and Mexico, and though AT&T’s senior plan page indicates it has «5G access included,» there’s no clarity on which circumstances will enable high-speed data downloads and uploads on the senior plan.
The plan also has 10GB of hotspot data per line per month, which is more generous than some other carrier offerings on our best senior plans list, along with a maximum 720p (SD) streaming speed for video. The plan also provides access to AT&T’s free ActiveArmor app that blocks spam calls.
Previously, AT&T offered a slightly discounted senior phone plan at $62 per month that was only available to customers living in Florida. Verizon retains a similar Florida-only senior plan. T-Mobile has several plans for seniors, from an older and basic Essentials Choice 55 plan starting at $45 per month up to Experience Beyond w/ 55 Plus starting at $85 per month and offering all the perks and extras of T-Mobile’s other plans, including a five-year plan price guarantee, streaming services and satellite service beyond T-Mobile’s network.
Here’s a breakdown of the best senior plans carriers offer 55-years-old and up customers:
Best Senior Plans: T-Mobile, AT&T, Mint Mobile and Verizon
Plan | Cost 1 line (AutoPay) | Cost 4 lines (AutoPay) | High-speed data | Hotspot data limit | Price guarantee | Max number of lines | Streaming resolution | |
T-Mobile | Essentials Choice 55 | $45 | N/A | 50GB | Unlimited 3G | N/A | 2 | 480p (SD) |
T-Mobile | Go5G 55 Plus | $75 | N/A | Unlimited 5G | 50GB | N/A | 2 | Up to 4K |
T-Mobile | Experience Beyond w/ 55+ | $85 | N/A | Unlimited 5G | 250GB | 5 years | 2 | Up to 4K |
AT&T | AT&T 55+ | $40 | $140 | Unlimited | 10GB | N/A | 10 | 480p (SD) |
Mint Mobile | Mint 55 | $15 | N/A | 5GB | Shared 5GB main data budget | N/A | 5 | 480p (SD) |
Verizon | Verizon 55 Plus | $62 | N/A | Unlimited 4G LTE | Unlimited 3G | N/A | 2 | 480p (SD) |
It’s worth noting that every carrier plan’s listed lowest price requires customers to sign up for autopay — otherwise, the plans are more expensive every month. Customers must also prove their age by submitting an identification document to their carrier.
Later this summer, AT&T will also offer a bundle combining two lines of AT&T 55+ with the customer’s choice of either AT&T Fiber or AT&T Internet Air fixed wireless access internet, according to the carrier’s blog post.
