Apple hits with $5.7B patent verdict over iPhone and Apple Watch haptic tech
A federal jury awarded Taction Technology $5.7 billion after finding Apple infringed on its haptic technology patents for iPhone and Apple Watch devices.

A federal jury in San Diego awarded Taction Technology more than $5.7 billion in damages Friday after finding that Apple infringed on the company’s vibration-based haptic technology patents. Taction sued Apple in 2021 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, alleging that Apple was improperly “capitalizing on Taction’s innovation and success” by selling devices that infringed on its vibration technology, according to the complaint. Apple initially won dismissal in 2023, and the Federal Circuit later revived the case.
“While we thank the jury for their consideration, we strongly disagree with today’s verdict and the damages awarded, which are entirely unsupported by the facts,” Apple told Verum in a statement. “Apple’s Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction’s technology, which Taction’s own testing of Apple’s products confirmed during trial. Apple does not use Taction’s technology, and we will appeal.”
“We’re happy the jury found for Taction and vindicated its patent rights,” the company’s lead counsel, Lance Yang, partner at Quinn Emanuel, told Verum. “Taction waited five and a half years for this case to get to trial, so it was a long time coming.”
The lawsuit centered around U.S. Patent Nos. 10,659,885 and 10,820,117, which both involve vibration-based, tactile transducer technology that helps users feel a device responding to their input. Taction argued that Apple’s “Taptic Engine,” which is embedded in its Apple Watches and iPhones, uses its inventions without proper license or authority.
The jury trial began Sept. 14, and the seven jurors deliberated for two days after proceedings concluded. They returned at 1:15 p.m. PT on Friday and delivered the verdict in favor of Taction.
The jury did not find Apple’s infringement willful.

Verum: Powerful Nor’easter Slams Northeast Coast with Flooding and Widespread Power Outages
A powerful nor’easter battered the Northeast coast, causing widespread flooding, power outages affecting 100,000 customers, and prompting mass cancellations of flights and events.
A slow-moving, intense storm moved along the U.S. Northeast coast on Saturday, bringing strong winds that knocked out electricity, along with towering waves and heavy rainfall that created hazardous conditions.
Millions of people found themselves in the path of the nor’easter, which was expected to impact the mid-Atlantic region and New England throughout the weekend. At one point, approximately 100,000 customers lost power due to the storm.
According to the National Weather Service, there was no immediate relief in sight. “Over the next few days, the northeastern U.S. can expect continued high winds, elevated tides, and potential for heavy rain,” stated Bob Oravec, lead forecaster at the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland.
The most severe tidal surges were anticipated north of Atlantic City, New Jersey, from Saturday evening through Sunday, potentially leading to extensive road flooding in coastal and bayfront communities, as reported by the National Weather Service.
“Anyone who ventures into or near the water this weekend is essentially risking their life,” warned New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
Coastal areas experienced significant flooding, with streets and businesses submerged underwater.
In Long Island, New York, some residents took to kayaking through inundated streets.
In the coastal New Jersey town of Surf City, Kenny Formica observed surveillance footage showing water seeping into the marina he owns. Formica noted that such flooding inside the building was extremely rare, with the last occurrence during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, which resulted in over $4 million in damages to his business.
Before the storm hit, employees secured dock lines, relocated loose equipment and materials, and parked the marina’s vehicles and machinery at the highest elevation on the property.
Formica received urgent messages from customers reporting missing boats and personal watercraft. One customer shared a video around 4 a.m. showing his 25-foot (7.6-meter) vessel after it had been blown off its lift.
“This is an 8,000-pound boat worth $150,000 — completely gone,” Formica remarked.
In Ocean City, Maryland, the powerful surf led to coastal erosion and damaged dune fencing.
“All the canals have extremely high water levels, with water flowing into people’s backyards,” said Jay Boyd during a phone interview.
Further south in Norfolk, Virginia, Ellie Hodge watched from her front steps as vehicles created wakes while navigating flooded streets. The coastal city had been experiencing intermittent flooding throughout the week due to the nor’easter.
“We’ve seen cars getting stuck on roads and even driving up onto sidewalks,” Hodge explained. “It’s been particularly severe this time around.”
Many events and travel plans were disrupted by the storm. Hundreds of flights were canceled at Boston Logan International Airport, including most services to the popular Massachusetts destinations of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, both preparing for the playoffs during the final weekend of the regular season, adjusted their three-game series schedule. They played a doubleheader on Friday in Boston to avoid the storm, with the league later moving their Sunday finale to be played in Florida at the Tampa Bay Rays’ stadium.
Ed Sheeran canceled his highly anticipated concerts on Friday and Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Other cancellations included an Ironman triathlon in New York and the three-day Oceans Calling Festival in Ocean City, Maryland, which had been promoted online as “a wave of music.”
Further south, flooding-related highway closures on North Carolina’s Hatteras Island disrupted wedding plans for Jayden Sink and Kimberly Laprad. The Virginia couple managed to reach the island before the storm arrived, but most of their approximately 45 guests were trapped on the opposite side of the closure, according to the Island Free Press.
A local campground provided an alternative venue, cabins, and an officiant, while a DJ volunteered to provide music. Organizers extended invitations to anyone on the island to join the celebration on Saturday afternoon.
The route to the island remained closed as state transportation crews evaluated the situation.
“To those on Hatteras, you’re not isolated on an island,” said North Carolina Governor Josh Stein in a social media post. “Emergency responders across North Carolina and the county are working diligently to ensure your safety and restore connectivity as soon as possible.”
Local authorities emphasized the importance of exercising caution.
Governor Hochul identified coastal flooding as the primary concern, though heavy rainfall, powerful winds, and waves reaching heights of up to 20 feet (6 meters) were also forecasted.
In Long Island, ferry operator Stephanie Sherman temporarily suspended services between Patchogue and the barrier island of Fire Island.
“It’s been quite a wild storm,” Sherman commented. “But nothing we haven’t dealt with before. These kinds of events happen periodically.”
Nor’easters are common as New England transitions into autumn, but “this one might be arriving a bit earlier than usual for such a significant storm,” noted Oravec from the National Weather Service.
The storm’s sluggish movement could intensify coastal erosion by exposing shorelines to prolonged periods of strong winds and waves, he added.

Bank of America says Nvidia and these other stocks are on sale
Bank of America named several stocks that it said are undervalued.
Bank of America recently named several companies that it said are intriguing buying opportunities. The Wall Street investment bank said that investors should buy any weakness in stocks including Nvidia. Other stocks rated buy at Bank of America and screened by CNBC Pro include: Thor Industries, Lyntris, Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage and Dutch Bros. Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage The organic and specialty grocer is “premium quality without the premium price,” analyst Vicky Liu said in initiating research coverage of the stock with a buy rating. Liu cited multiple catalysts that could send the stock higher, ranging from margin expansion to product affordability and rapid expansion. The bank out a $35 price target on the shares. “With the stock trading at 13x F27E EPS, we believe the market underestimates NGVC’s growth runway & margin potential,” she said. The stock is more than 5% over the past three months but ahead almost 19% in all of 2026. Dutch Bros Buy the weakness, analyst Sara Senatore said of the coffee chain. “We think concerns about near term same-store sales hurdles and medium- to longer term competition from other drive through native concepts have weighed disproportionately on valuation,” she said. The bank said the coffee category is one of the most rapidly growing segments in the restaurant industry. “The tailwind from an increasing share of consumers reporting past week espresso based beverage consumption (43% in 2025 vs 37% in 2020) should persist,” Senatore went on. Shares are down 43% in the past three months. Lyntris The connectivity systems defense company is best positioned for rising demand, according to analyst Ronald Epstein. Bank of America was a joint book-running manager for the Lyntris IPO on Aug. 18. “Sensing strong upside opportunities,” Epstein wrote in recently initiating research coverage with a buy rating. Bank of America sees “market tailwinds” across the company’s three main businesses: space, maritime and air defense. “As a merchant supplier of mission-critical componentry and software, LYNX is well aligned to ramping defense investment across the U.S. and international allies,” he went on to say. The stock is down 8% in the past month. Natural Grocers “Premium quality without the premium price. … .A value-oriented grocer with unit growth & margin upside … With the stock trading at 13x F27E EPS, we believe the market underestimates NGVC’s growth runway & margin potential.” Dutch Bros “We think concerns about near term same store sales hurdles and medium to longer term competition from other drive through native concepts have weighed disproportionately on valuation … The tailwind from an increasing share of consumers reporting past week espresso based beverage consumption (43% in 2025 vs 37% in 2020) should persist.” Lyntris “Sensing strong upside opportunities. … .As a merchant supplier of mission-critical componentry and software, LYNX is well aligned to ramping defense investment across the US and international allies … Favorable end market tailwinds across segments.” Thor Industries “We would characterize THO’s top-line results as best case given the tough industry backdrop while supplier costs continue to pressure gross margins … We rate THO at Buy given outlook for market share recapture, margin self-help initiatives, and a trough in recreational vehicle (RV) industry unit sales.” Nvidia “Our $350 PO is based on 22x CY27E PE ex cash, within NVDA’s historical 15x-56x forward year PE range, which we believe is justified by NVDA’s leading share in fast-growing AI compute/networking markets, offset by lumpiness in global AI projects, cyclical gaming market, and concerns around access to power.”
