iPhone 17 Rumors: Everything to Know, From a Slim ‘Air’ Model to Fresh Colors
Apple’s upcoming smartphone lineup could feature a redesigned camera bump, a higher refresh rate and longer battery life.

The anticipated reveal of Apple’s newest iPhone is just around the corner. For months now, rumors have been swirling about what the upcoming device, likely called the iPhone 17, could look like, from a redesigned camera module to fresh colors to a slimmer «Air» version of the handset. The phones are expected to debut in early September.
Perhaps the biggest looming question is whether iPhones could get pricier, especially with tariffs. President Donald Trump has said Apple will have to pay a 25% tariff on iPhones made outside the US. This would almost certainly lead to a price hike for consumers. We’ll have to wait to see how Apple responds and if shoppers really do end up shouldering that extra cost.
Here’s what analysts and leakers predict about the iPhone 17 lineup.
A slimmer iPhone 17 ‘Air’
One of the hottest rumors surrounds a possible iPhone «Air,» a thinner version of Apple’s flagship device that would replace the iPhone Plus option.
The Air could feature a 6.6-inch screen, making it slightly smaller than the iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro Max but still bigger than the baseline model, according to analysts Jeff Pu and Ming-Chi Kuo. A Bloomberg report from March supports those rumors and notes that the iPhone Air could measure 5.5mm thick. The report also suggests that the phone will cost about $900, putting it on par with the iPhone 16 Plus and maintaining its place in the iPhone hierarchy. But it’s not clear if tariffs will affect that price.

For Apple to slim down a device, it would need to make hardware trade-offs and that might include the phone’s camera. According to Kuo and Bloomberg, it’s possible this version of the iPhone 17 would have only one main camera, doing without the ultrawide and 5x telephoto lenses that have been staples of Apple’s premium iPhones for years. This would place the slim iPhone in the same camera camp as the $600 iPhone 16E, as that phone has only one rear lens. The good news, though, is that the selfie camera on the iPhone Air could get a boost; more on that later.
One key challenge will be maintaining a high battery capacity, as a slimmer build typically means less space for the battery and thus a potential compromise on battery life — as is the case with the skinny Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. A May report from AppleInsider suggests the thinner iPhone could use a silicon-anode battery to help extend battery life. Another feature that could play a critical role here is the AI-powered Adaptive Power feature arriving with iOS 26. This can help conserve battery by automatically adjusting your iPhone’s performance based on how you’re using it at the moment, according to Apple. Adaptive Power could therefore be especially helpful with making the iPhone 17 Air’s battery last longer.
Along with tackling battery shortcomings, Bloomberg suggests Apple will pack the iPhone 17 Air with superslim bezels, a Camera Control button and the Dynamic Island.
In May, Pu noted the iPhone 17 Air will feature an A19 chip, while the baseline model would have the same A18 chip used in the iPhone 16. The Air could also include the Apple-developed 5G modem, called the C1 chip, which debuted on the iPhone 16E.
Looking ahead, it’s possible Apple could take its hardware breakthroughs with the iPhone 17 Air and apply them to a foldable phone in 2026 — similar to how Samsung borrowed the slimmer design of the Galaxy S25 Edge and brought it to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to make it feel as close to a standard, mainstream phone as possible, at least when closed. If the iPhone 17 Air takes off, that thinner form factor could shape Apple’s other future devices.
A higher refresh rate across the board
Rumor has it that all models of the iPhone 17 will feature a 120Hz display, bumping the non-Pro models up from their current 60Hz refresh rate. That could be a welcome change, as the discrepancy between the Pro and non-Pro refresh rate is surprising; when Apple debuted the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus with a 60Hz display, there was a bit of an outcry from folks who expected more in 2024. This rumored update could remedy that — and possibly bring the always-on display to the baseline model.
There’s been a lot of back-and-forth about whether the latest iPhones will have a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective display. A July report from MacRumors suggests that feature will in fact be arriving on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, just not the baseline iPhone 17 or the Air. This would make the Pro models the first iPhones with an anti-reflective screen, giving them a feature that CNET’s Patrick Holland deemed one of the best attributes of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Camera upgrades
It’s not an iPhone release without a camera upgrade and there have been plenty of rumors about what the camera module could look like on Apple’s upcoming phones. In January, a leaked image from Majin Bu on X suggested the phone could feature a pill-shaped camera bar, essentially resembling what you’d find on Google’s Pixel 9 phone. In February, Bu followed up with CAD renders of what’s said to be the iPhone 17 lineup, featuring horizontal camera bars, as well as larger rectangular bars on the iPhone 17 Pro models.

Front Page Tech also shared iPhone 17 Pro renders in a video in February, depicting a larger camera bar that maintains the lens’ stacked layout. A separate video on the iPhone 17 Air shows a smaller camera bar, with one lens on the left.
In April, Bloomberg reported the «iPhone 17 Pro will look a lot more like the 16 Pro than anticipated,» adding, «From the front, the 17 Pro will appear quite similar to the 16 Pro. It’s the back camera that will look meaningfully different.» The latest rumors suggest the iPhone 17 Pro’s three-lens camera arrangement will be maintained but will sit on a new panel that stretches across the phone’s width and is the same color as the rest of the phone.
Later in April, Bu again posted an image of the purported iPhone 17 lineup, showing those wider camera bars with the stacked lenses still configured to the left.

Not until next year, for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, will Apple be «preparing a major shake-up» for the phone’s design, Bloomberg says. That includes a (long-rumored) foldable version and a «bold new Pro model that makes more extensive use of glass.»
Another camera-related rumor is that the selfie camera on all iPhone 17 models, including the Air, will be upgraded to 24 megapixels, according to Pu. That’s a decent bump from the current 12-megapixel front-facing camera on the iPhone 16 lineup, although it’s important to remember that more megapixels don’t automatically mean better photos. Still, given how much people increasingly rely on their front cameras to snap selfies and record videos for TikTok and Instagram, this will surely be a welcome advancement.

So, what hues will the iPhone 17 lineup arrive in? Bu has been posting renderings of what might be on the horizon.

iOS 26 brings a fresh look
Apple has revamped its mobile operating system with iOS 26 (not iOS 19), which is named after the last two digits of the upcoming year. And with iPadOS, MacOS, WatchOS, TVOS and VisionOS following the same naming convention, the move is designed to bring more uniformity — naming-wise and appearance-wise — across the operating systems.
The new Liquid Glass interface brings a more transparent, lens-like look to the iPhone and other Apple devices. With iOS 26, the Camera app also adopts a more minimalistic design, and Photos once again makes it easier to find your albums by adding separate tabs for your Library and Collections, instead of forcing you to scroll through a single cluttered screen. Updates to Messages include being able to add backgrounds to chat windows and create polls in group chats, and a new screening tool can better detect spam texts and move messages from unknown senders to a dedicated folder. Other possible features
It’s not just iOS 26’s Adaptive Power feature that could stretch the battery life on upcoming iPhones. It’s rumored the iPhone 17 Pro Max could be thicker to house a bigger battery, according to Ice Universe. The leaker says the top-of-the-line phone could go from 8.25mm on the iPhone 16 Pro Max to 8.725mm on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. In addition, leaker Instant Digital suggests the high-end phone could have around a 5,000 mAh battery, a notable increase over the 4,685 mAh on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, according to third-party tests.
Rumors on what frames the iPhone 17 lineup will feature have gone back and forth. In February, Pu suggested the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will all have aluminum frames. He noted that the iPhone 17 Air could be the outlier with a titanium frame.
There also have been contradictory reports on whether the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 17 lineup will look any different. In May, Pu said all iPhone 17 models will use a new metalens technology for the proximity sensor, which could allow Apple to reduce the size of the Face ID sensor and the Dynamic Island, according to 9to5Mac. Kuo, on the other hand, said in January that the Dynamic Island would remain «largely unchanged» in the iPhone 17 lineup compared to the iPhone 16. We’ll have to see what ends up being true.
In February, Kuo noted Apple will swap out Broadcom’s Wi-Fi chips for in-house chips across the iPhone 17 lineup, stating this would «enhance connectivity across Apple devices.» It’s not yet clear what exactly this would mean but it would be interesting if Apple’s C1 chip were also accompanied by its own Wi-Fi chip.
In April, tipster Digital Chat Station noted that given the use of Apple Intelligence and AI on a «large scale,» the iPhone 17 lineup will come with 12GB of RAM, instead of the current 8GB. Kuo noted the iPhone 17 Air and Pro models would sport that increased 12GB of RAM, but that Apple was still deciding whether to equip the baseline model with 8GB or 12GB of RAM. In May, Pu noted the baseline would remain at 8GB.

This Free Heat Warning System Could Help You Prepare for Dangerous Summer Conditions
The risks of heat are only growing thanks to lasting heat waves, extreme nighttime temperatures and unusual humidity, like the current «corn sweat» in the Midwest.
A massive heat dome is gripping much of the US again this week, with the Midwest facing a brutal combination of scorching temperatures and stifling humidity due in part to so-called «corn sweat,» or the extra moisture crops release into the air. This added humidity is pushing heat indexes well above 100 degrees across parts of the Corn Belt and beyond, compounding the risks for millions under excessive heat warnings and advisories.
The extreme heat bearing down across the US this summer can have a serious impact on public health. Excess heat can exacerbate common health conditions, but it can also mess with your air conditioning, overheat phones and cause meltdowns for other tech. If you live in an area at risk for extreme heat, or know someone who does, you can sign up for a free alert system to help you prepare. The HeatRisk tool from the National Weather Service can send personalized warnings straight to your inbox, giving you advance notice when dangerously high temperatures are headed your way.
HeatRisk is free to use and you’ll want to keep tabs on it to avoid heat safety issues, such as heatstroke, dehydration or fatigue. Here’s how to use it and why you should.

What is NWS HeatRisk?
NWS HeatRisk is a clickable map of the US, which is used to forecast extreme heat and assess the impact of that weather on public health. You can click anywhere on the interactive map and pull up a seven-day forecast of risk assessments for any city, town or area.
The threat assessment is built on a five-level system that’s color-coded for severity, with green representing little to no risk and magenta representing the highest risk. The map will display a seven-day forecast for anywhere in the country, along with the color of the health threat level.
The system also considers how unusual the heat is for your area, how long the heat is expected to last and how it could affect people who are more vulnerable, such as older adults, kids or outdoor workers.

Threat colors
NWS HeatRisk has five levels, each with a different color that corresponds to the size of the health risk:
0: Green
According to the NWS tool, there’s little to no risk involved with the forecasted heat at the green level.
1: Yellow
At the yellow level, there’s a minor risk for people who are extremely sensitive to heat.
2: Orange
The orange level represents a moderate risk to the general public, with potential danger to health systems and heat-sensitive industries.
3: Red
Red means there’s a major risk to anyone without access to immediate cooling and hydration, with likely impacts to health systems and heat-sensitive industries.
4: Magenta
The most extreme level is magenta. It’s both a rare occurrence and one that’s of long duration, with no overnight relief and is likely to affect health systems, heat-sensitive industries and infrastructure.
How to sign up for heat risk alerts
To get free heat warnings, go to Heat.gov, enter your ZIP code and sign up for email or text alerts. You’ll get daily updates when your area faces extreme heat levels that could pose a health risk.
Signing up for alerts is a quick step that could help you plan ahead, from adjusting outdoor activities to checking on family or neighbors, or just opting to stay hydrated and inside.
Other ways to track heat risks
Similar to NWS HeatRisk, a tool from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called the HeatRisk Dashboard gives you a seven-day forecast to assess the potential health impact from extreme heat.
Data Explorer is another tool from the CDC’s Environmental Public Health Tracking Program, which offers further HeatRisk information and assessment resources for COVID-19 and other illnesses.

Why extreme heat warnings matter
Summer 2025 has already been a scorcher in many parts of the country. It’s important to stay diligent since extreme heat is the deadliest weather hazard in the US, causing more deaths each year than hurricanes, floods or tornadoes.
The risks of heat are only growing. Heat waves are lasting longer, nighttime temperatures are staying high and unusual humidity — like the current «corn sweat» in the Midwest — can make it even harder for your body to cool down.
Staying informed is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself and your loved ones. Along with signing up for alerts, the CDC recommends learning the signs of heat-related illnesses, drinking plenty of water and never leaving children or pets in cars.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Could’ve Been Incredible. Here’s Why It’s Not.
Chinese developer Leenzee’s first Soulslike game, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, overcomplicated formula hinders its greatness.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is the latest high-profile Soulslike game, this time coming from Chinese developer Leenzee. Unlike some of the most recent Soulslike releases, Wuchang is more faithful to the formula created by FromSoftware’s Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, but the changes it does make might be the game’s downfall.
Wuchang is an ambitious Soulslike, which helps it stand out in what’s one of the newest and most popular subgenres around. What keeps it from being great is that all these new systems are a chore to actually understand and use. I’m sure that if players perfectly grasp a balance of the systems, they could make a character with some amazing capabilities, yet it’s hard to reach that sweet spot playing through the game.
Just to get it out of the way, Wuchang’s story is like a lot of Soulslike games. You play as the titular Bai Wuchang, a pirate warrior suffering from amnesia who has to fight through different areas in ancient China during the Ming dynasty. People have been victims of «feathering,» the game’s sickness that makes the infected sprout feathers and eventually turn into monsters. Wuchang can harness the power of feathering, making her the ideal warrior to uncover what’s going on.
Is this a confusing and vague storyline? Yes, because it’s a Soulslike and that’s practically a requirement. The people you meet speak vaguely about other people and subjects that don’t make sense until you piece them together with item descriptions, clues found throughout the areas and environmental story elements. It’s hardly a storyline that you could fully figure out in a casual playthrough, so I’ll be depending on the lore guys on YouTube to piece the story together in the days and weeks after the game’s release.
Progression system has too much going on
What’s important for Wuchang — and any Soulslike that aims to stand out in the subgenre — is the gameplay, and it’s certainly unique. It’s dynamic but almost to a fault, with a lot of complexity getting in the way of combat flow.
As Wuchang, you have access to five classes of weapons: axes that do big damage but are slow; longswords that do good damage while allowing for parries; twin swords that allow for quick attacks at the cost of lower damage; one-handed swords that are in the midrange for damage and speed; spears that do solid damage while also being able to poke at a longer distance.
Throughout the game, you’ll come across different weapons of each type. There’s 25 in total, and they all have a unique look, abilities and stats from each other. So you’re not as overwhelmed as, say, in Elden Ring, where you have more than 300 weapons to choose from.
To make full use of these weapons, however, you have to work your way through the skill tree, and this tree represents a hurdle for the game as it overcomplicates things.
The skill tree reminds me more of the Sphere Grid from Final Fantasy X. It’s split into six paths, one for each weapon and one for general-purpose use with universal upgrades like adding to your healing flasks, being able to do more damage with certain effects, and getting more magic points. Along each path are also various stat improvements like adding an extra point to strength, endurance, agility and so on.
When you acquire enough red mercury, the souls or currency in the game, you can gain a level, providing a red essence that unlocks a spot on the grid. You need to go down these paths to power up Wuchang as well as the weapons, as improved attacks and mastery of a weapon also require going down each path. Then, at a certain point of unlocking more spots on the grid, the path extends to give you even more stats, abilities and so on.
If you’re confused by reading this, it’s going to be just as confusing when you try it out for yourself. It’s one thing to level up a character and put points into various stats, but it’s another to level up and realize that you need to spend skill points unlocking a path to get more healing flasks.
Where the leveling system messes with you is when you don’t unlock a certain path that you need for a boss. One boss in particular was kicking my ass, as it’s the first boss you need to use deflecting, or parrying, to beat (unless you’re a Soulslike ace who can play perfectly). I had gone down the axe upgrade path and didn’t realize that I was ill-equipped for the fight. While there is a tip message that comes up mentioning deflecting, this was the first time the game even mentioned this capability. After failing to beat this boss for hours, I decided to take a long look at the grid and saw that the deflect ability was a few upgrades into the longsword path.
Fortunately, you can respec these points at a shrine for free, which I did, and I defeated the boss after a few more tries. Mind you, I could have beaten the boss the other way — playing perfectly — but deflecting and parrying to expose the boss’s weakness was far easier. And prior to this, the bosses weren’t giving me much trouble, just requiring a few deaths in order to understand their pattern.
This upgrade grid is super interesting, but there are far too many abilities and benefits that should be unlocked from the start to help reduce the frustration when playing.
Madness is making me mad
Another interesting idea in Wuchang is the madness system. This is a play on the Humanity and Kindling found in the original Souls games, with a bit of Insight from Bloodborne — a sort of passive stat that changes how the game world evolves as you play. As you die or defeat certain enemies, your madness will increase. As your madness increases, you can become more powerful. In that path I mentioned about gaining more healing flasks, there are unlockable traits where, if you have a certain amount of madness, you do more damage or gain some extra ability.
Madness is based on your level, so the higher the level you are, the higher the maximum madness increases. If your madness is low, you can even acquire a certain amount of madness to buy an item at a shrine.
So what happens when your madness is at max? Well, that’s a bad thing for two reasons. The first is that you’ll do more damage, but you’ll also receive more damage. This is going to be great for the hardcore Soulslike player with perfect dodge and parry timing. I’m sure speedrunners will make use of this trait. However, when you’re getting your ass kicked by a boss, the last thing you want is for them to hit you for more damage.
Arguably the most interesting part of this madness system is that if you die at, or near, max madness, the spot where you died that has some of your leftover red mercury will take the form of an evil doppelganger that you’ll have to fight. Defeat it and you’ll get an item as well as removing all of your madness.
It’s an interesting feature, but it’s also a pain. To get rid of the madness, you can kill certain humanoid enemies, but sometimes to kill those people, you need to kill non-humanoid enemies, which increases madness. Alternatively, you can find and buy items that will reduce madness at a certain temple, but those aren’t widely available.
Where madness really causes a problem is with bosses. If you die repeatedly at a boss and your death spot is in the boss arena, the doppelganger won’t show up, so you’re kind of stuck with max madness unless you decide to go get killed somewhere else, take down the doppelganger and be back to zero madness.
Pretty but punishing
Wuchang performs as well as any Soulslike game when it comes to the action and graphics. The speed of the gameplay is just a step below Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, FromSoftware’s parrying-intensive Soulslike, but also a step above its other popular title, Bloodborne. It’s fast-paced, but it’s also dynamic.
I say it’s dynamic because of the Spirit Points system, which is the game’s version of mana. Unlike most Soulslike games, you don’t have a mana pool to draw from when casting magic or doing special attacks. Instead, you need to acquire Spirit Points, and the easiest way to do this is by dodging. A perfectly timed dodge nets you a point that will let you use one special ability or one basic spell. On the grid, there are spots to unlock more points as well as more ways to get the points from deflecting attacks, doing a certain combo or having a certain amount of madness.
This system requires players to be more active in fights, so someone can’t make a glass cannon magic character right off the bat who fights at a distance, although I’m sure there is a build where that’s possible in the late game. You need to really get in there and mix it up with the enemies, which I can appreciate.
Then come the visuals, and Wuchang has some great-looking scenes. Bosses in the game are also unique in both their attacks and visuals, something highly prized by Soulslike players.
The game’s presentation overall is on par with any of the AAA titles out there. The English voice acting is a little weak, but people talk so little in the game that it practically doesn’t matter.
I played the game on a standard PS5, and there were instances when the PS5 did seem to have some issues with dropped frames. It happened after a certain amount of playing and not due to too much going on-screen.
Wuchang is a great effort by Leenzee. While the game won’t revolutionize the Soulslike genre, it does the next best thing by offering some ideas that they, or maybe another developer, can refine. Maybe it will become a mainstay for the genre in future games. If anything, I believe a Wuchang sequel could be an incredible game if it happens. But right now, the formula just isn’t there yet.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers comes out on July 23 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles for $50. It will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day 1.
